Steps for Students

  1. Listen to the teacher and look at the pictures ACTIVITY 1
  2. Are the sentences true or false?
  3. If a sentence is false, what is the correct answer?

Students can answer the questions by:

  • saying ‘TRUE’ or ‘FALSE’
  • standing up if it’s TRUE and sit down if it’s FALSE
  • moving left if it’s TRUE and right if it’s FALSE

Steps for Students

  1. Listen to your teacher and try some past perfect tense exercises.
  2. Remember that the past perfect is used when we want to talk about a past action and an earlier past action in one sentence.
  3. The earlier past action follows the structure subject + had/hadn’t + past participle.
  4. Remember what Violet said:
    • Before I came to Ireland (past action)
    • I had never seen a wild dolphin (earlier past action)
    • I had heard of St Patrick (earlier past action)

6. Take it in turns to complete the sentence using the Past Perfect Tense.

For example:

My phone didn’t work because …………..

I had forgotten to charge it. (earlier past action)

I had dropped it earlier. (earlier past action)

It had gotten wet. (earlier past action)

  1. Demonstrate how to use the Past Perfect Tense in English. See here for a guide and online exercises:GUIDE
  2. Divide the class into small groups of ideally 4 students.
  3. Instruct them to go to this link: ACTIVITY 2
  4. Press ‘start’ and ‘deal’.
  5. They must take it in turns to complete the sentence using the Past Perfect Tense
    • For example: My phone didn’t work because ………….. I had forgotten to charge it. Or I had dropped it earlier. Or It had gotten wet.

To make this activity more competitive it can be done with the whole class and the team with the best answer to the prompt gets a point. The team with the most points wins. Teams can write their answers on a piece of card and display simultaneously.

To develop spoken skills through a listening task.

Steps for Students

  1. Go to this link ACTIVITY 3
  2. Follow the instructions and play the listening.
  3. Complete the exercises and self-check your answers online with your group.
  4. Now you need to create a short audio tour of a city.
  5. You must select a minimum of 5 places of interest to visit.
  6. Please record your audio on their phones and share or go to www.vocaroo.com
  7. Upload your recordings to a shared space.

  2. Follow the instructions and play the listening for the students of ‘A Tour of London’.
  3. Ask student to work independently on the exercises and self-check their answers.
  4. When they have completed this activity aid with any follow up questions or clarification needed.
  5. Show them how they can use this site for self-study.
  6. Next place them into groups and ask them to create a short audio tour of their city.
  7. They must select a minimum of 5 places of interest to visit.
  8. They can record their audio on their phones and share or go to www.vocaroo.com
  9. Upload the recordings to a shared space (padlet/google classroom/ facebook).
  10. Play the recordings and have the students clap for the best one (loudest clap wins).

15 - 20 minutes

To teach names of countries in English using an online game.

Steps for Students

  1. Go to VIDEO
  2. Watch the video (2 minutes) and repeat the names of the country to help your pronunciation.
  3. Go to ACTIVITY 4
  4. Select ‘sound on’ + ‘voice on’ to hear the pronunciation and correct answer.
  5. Identify the correct country on the European Map.
  6. Check the timer in the top left.
  7. The winning group will have the fastest time!

 

  1. Go to VIDEO And play video (2 minutes) of countries in English encouraging the students to repeat the names to aid with pronunciation.
  2. Share the next link ACTIVITY 4 and have small groups work on shared devices to play an online game with the same map and countries as the previous video.
  3. Ask them to select ‘sound on’ + ‘voice on’ to hear the pronunciation and correct answer.
  4. Students must identify the correct country on the European Map.
  5. The winning group will have the fastest time.

Watch the youtube short on the History of Halloween:

  1. In your group decide on which celebration you will make a one-minute video on.
  2. Who will be the director?
  3. Who will record the video?
  4. Who will act or narrate?
  5. What images will you use?
  6. Will these images be drawings or photos?
  7. Create your video and show to your class.
  1. Show students this short history of Halloween one minute video: ACTIVITY 5
  2. Divide class into groups and assign them a celebration to make a one-minute video about. This celebration could be an international one for example: The History of Valentine’s Day in one minute Or a Local/regional one.
  3. Post the finished videos on the school website/Facebook or Instagram site + please tag BOOST!
