There is an international day at school. The pupils are talking about how they get to school in different countries. Three students from England, India and Italy join them online and share their experience. Can you guess who goes by Double-decker? Who do you think usually rides a bike? And do you know what a riskshaw is?
How about you? How do you ususally travel to school?

Aim of Activity

10 minutes

To check understanding of the main ideas in the video by asking multiple choice WH- questions

Steps for Students

Click the link: ACTIVITY 1

  1. Get a Plickers Card from your teacher.
  2. Read the quiz question and answer it by turning your Plickers Card to the corresponding position of your answer (side with correct letter up).
  3. Wait for the teacher to scan your Card.

Steps for Students

Practising and developing pronunciation of key language focusing on long vowel sound /ai/ and long vowel sound /ei/.

Steps for Students

  2. Play in 2 teams.
  3. Choose a vowel sound and then match it with words from the puzzle to reveal the picture. Make a sentence with the word.
  4. Discuss what you think the picture is showing.

Group Puzzle

  1. Click the link: ACTIVITY 3
  2. Play with the whole class together or in smaller teams.
  3. Learners choose words from the puzzle which correspond to the selected vowel sound.
  4. If the answer is right, the picture is revealed.
  5. Learners play in two teams to reveal the picture and then guess what the picture depicts.

 

TIP!

For better practice divide the class into even number of smaller teams. Give each 2 teams a tablet to play pronunciation game against each other.

Aim of Activity

15 minutes

A groupwork speaking activity to practice forming questions, using question words (who, what, when, where, why, how) using means of transport vocabulary and adverbs of frequency.

Steps for Students

  1. Roll the die.
  2. Move forward according to the number on the die.
  3. Say a sentence within 15 seconds using the word written on the space you landed on. The first player to get to the finish is the winner.

Snakes and Ladders game

For face-to-face lesson you’ll need:

  • Snakes & Ladders game PDF to assemble
  • printer
  • cardstock paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • game pieces (checkers, coins, blocks, etc.)
  • dice

 

  1. Print out the pieces of the board. /For an online lesson prepare a PDF visual to share to the class on the screen
  2. Trim off the white edges, assemble them in the correct order (check the numbers in the squares for reference), and tape the sheets together along the seams on both sides of the board.
  3. The player(s) begin by placing their game pieces on the START square.
  4. The first player rolls the die and moves forward that number of spaces.
  5. On each space the player needs to say a sentence using the word written on the space in order to keep moving.
  6. If they don’t know in less than 15 seconds, then their turn stops, and the other player takes a turn.
  7. If a player rolls a number that lands them at the bottom of a ladder and they get the word correct, they may “climb” to the square at the top of the ladder.
  8. If a player rolls a number that lands them on the head of a snake, then they “slide” down to the square at the snake’s tail.
  9. The game finishes when all the players get to the FINISH square, with the first player to the end being declared the winner.
  10. You do not have to roll an exact number to finish the game.

TIP!

  • Learners play the game in groups of 2- 4 players depending on the number of students in the class.
  • It is possible to play without printing the board or online with the PDF visual displayed on the shared screen.
  • Students throw the dice and move forward or back without placing their game counter.
  • They just keep making notes about their current place on the board.

  • answering yes/no questions using means of transport vocabulary and adverbs of frequency giving opinion talking about a habit showing knowledge

Steps for Students

  1. In your team, choose a question. Answer the question or unjumble the sentence/answer.
  2. The winner is the team with the most points.

  2. Play the game in teams on an interactive board. Teams can be removed or added by clicking +/- at the lower left corner.
  3. There are 30 questions testing the grammar and developing speaking skills (jumbled questions, WH questions, team opinion questions, questions about habits and knowledge questions)
  4. Teams choose questions to answer correctly.
  5. Each question has points according to the difficulty (100 – 500 points)
  6. Click the icon at the lower right corner to set a timer for the questions.

 

TIP!

In questions which are not focused on grammar, it is up to the teacher to assess the correct answers depending on the level of English of the students, specifically in the questions Say a definition.
